We developed the SmartMouth Clinical DDS oral rinse to provide your patients with an OTC alternative to a chlorhexidine rinse, which requires a prescription and often has negative side effects. To ensure our formula provides the best option for your patients, a six-week study comparing SmartMouth Clinical DDS oral rinse to 0.12% chlorhexidine rinse was conducted at Saint Louis University Center for Advanced Dental Education and Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine.
Seventy-six subjects were divided into three groups and given one of the three mouth rinses with usage instructions and directions to add this to their daily brushing and flossing oral care for six weeks.
Results were analyzed and compared at the end of Week 3 and again at the end of Week 6, based on the following parameters:
This index scores gingival inflammation from 0 (healthy) to 3 (severe inflammation)
This rates plaque accumulation from 0 (no plaque) to 5 (plaque covering 2/3 of surface or more)
Tooth Stain Index Change
This score is determined by the amount of tooth stain from 0 (no stain) to 3 (greater than 2/3 of surface). (The higher the score, the worse the staining)
This score is determined by adding the number of bleeding sites and dividing by the number of teeth to assess gingival inflammation. (The higher the score, the worse the inflammation)
This index scores the amount of calculus accumulation by adding surfaces from the lingual of the mandibular anterior teeth. (The higher the score, the worse the calculus accumulation)
Clinical Test Results
SmartMouth Clinical DDS Activated Oral Rinse is an effective alternative to 0.12% chlorhexidine rinse for reducing gingival inflammation, bleeding, and plaque with less taste alteration or tooth stain, and better overall compliance.
